Key Concepts (Module 1: Artificial Intelligence and Design Thinking)

Throughout Module 1, I learned about how I can gain a better understanding of AI’s functioning and how to use it ethically and responsibly. Given that the world of artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, I find myself reflecting on the following questions posed by my instructor:

  • What were the most important concepts you learned in this module?
  • How did these concepts challenge your previous understanding of English language teaching?
  • How do you plan to apply these concepts in your future teaching?

Well, I’ve delved into essential concepts related to generative AI and its diverse language model types. For example, models of information classification, translation, and educational content generation—including text, images, lesson plans, summaries, dialogues, rubrics, and even interactive games. The impact of this knowledge on my daily routine is profound. It assists me in managing tasks and activities within my specialization course. I’ve learned of utilizing crucial technological resources such as Microsoft Copilot, Chat GPT, and a little of Gemini. Moreover, I’ve learned the concept of Prompt Design, which involves crafting precise instructions for successful task execution. Understanding how context influences AI responses has been eye-opening. For instance, I’ve encountered instances of hallucinations—when an AI provides a link that doesn’t exist or offers incorrect information due to insufficient context or potentially unreliable data. Lastly, I’ve immersed myself in the Design Thinking Process, and its five-step approach: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. This methodology could allow me to provide concise solutions to individuals facing challenges because design thinking guides me toward effective problem-solving.

These concepts challenged my thinking because they helped me better organize the presentation of my ideas to find great quality information to develop in a task or class. It has also helped me increase my creativity because AI provides countless technological resources with excellent strategies and games. With Artificial Intelligence, my planning time has been reduced because teaching the English language is becoming more and more interesting because traditional methods of; paper, books, and pencils where everything was monotonous slowly becoming in; online educational games, interactive quizzes, games never before thought of in the classroom, even good quality presentations without the need for a screen or projector. Therefore, as a young novice teacher, I have realized that the correct use of artificial intelligence makes teachers around the world adapt a well-organized style to classes because they challenge the comfort zone of the English language.

On the other hand, I plan to keep using artificial intelligence in a safe and balanced manner for my future classes. This means I won’t overuse it, and I’ll carefully review the content it provides to adapt it to my lessons. Likewise, I’ll apply design thinking to offer suitable solutions to colleagues or students when needed. Design thinking, with its five essential steps (empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test), will guide me in effective problem-solving. Lastly, I intend to continue exploring more about AI and find innovative ways to enhance my teaching for better learning outcomes.
